What is the Life Science Summer Institute Externship Program?
The Externship Program, a part of the Life Sciences Summer Institute (LSSI), was developed to help increase awareness of the local life sciences industries (biotechnology, medical devices, diagnostics, and related areas) to regional high school students.
Here is what one graduate said:

The LSSI program brought me up to date with the latest laboratory science skills and research in a high school friendly applied manner.
- I have been able to write a Biotechnology course in my school district and be a part of encouraging our local community college to expeditiously expand its offering into biotechnology.
- My students are able to obtain college credit from this class as articulated with two community colleges.
- I have directly now taught hundreds of students the skills from the LSSI. Prior to starting the biotechnology classes in my district I was able to immediately teach the labs and concepts in my biology courses supported by the lab reagents provided by the Southern California Biotechnology Center.
- I have taken my classes on field trips to experience the biotechnology industry first hand.
The LSSI program has provided me the knowledge, expertise and skills to provide relevant and engaging laboratory experiences to my educational pedagogy. I believe this program has dramatically opened the doors for many of my students to possible careers in science and be better educated citizens.
